A Uniform Resource Locator is a reference that points to a resource, or file, on the Internet. This resource can be a text file, an image file, an HTML file, etc. The format of a URL is:
service://hostname/filename
Where:
service is the type of service requested. The name of the service for accessing Web pages is http.
hostname is the name of the computer system. The name is usually made up of machine name followed by a dot (.) followed by the domain name.
filename is the name of the file you are accessing. This could be a relative path name or an absolute path name.
